Esomeprazole, commonly known as Nexium® is a prescription medication used to treat certain conditions in adults. Nexium® is a brand-name drug that has gained FDA approval for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other reflux conditions. The drug is available by prescription only and is also available over the counter (OTC) under the brand name Zegerid®.

Nexium® is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat acid reflux and heartburn. In clinical trials, patients experienced acid regurgitation in approximately 80 percent of patients. The most common side effects were mild to moderate in intensity, with more common side effects occurring in 1 percent of patients. More than 30 percent of patients reported that they had experienced an adverse event. More than 1 in 4 patients experienced at least one of the following: headache, muscle aches, indigestion, back pain, back pain, or muscle aches.
